Winter might seem like a quiet time in the garden, but it’s actually one of the most rewarding seasons to get outside and give your outdoor space a little TLC. The colder months offer the perfect opportunity for low-effort, high-impact tasks that set you up beautifully for spring.
Read on if you're looking for easy winter garden jobs, or simple but satisfying ways to improve your garden in winter...
Prune Dormant Trees & Shrubs
Winter is ideal for pruning many deciduous plants because you can clearly see their framework. Removing dead, crossing, or overcrowded branches keeps plants healthy and encourages strong growth in the Spring.
Great candidates for winter pruning include:
Apple and pear trees
Wisteria
Roses
This is one of the best winter gardening tasks for beginners, as it helps shape the garden for the year ahead.
Add Winter Colour With Pots
If your garden is looking a little grey, a few pots filled with colour can make a huge difference. Cramming winter pots with winter pansies and violas, cyclamen coum, heathers and hebes will give you something to enjoy on even the dullest of days.
Wildlife Saviours
Winter is tough for wildlife, so giving them a helping hand can make all the difference. Some fun projects, which would also be great for families are:
Building or adding to a bug hotel - use materials such as sticks, leaves, bricks and straw to create lots of nooks and crannies for insects.
Keep your bird feeder topped up, so birds know that they can rely on a regular food source
Build and/or decorate a hedgehog home, then hide it away in a quiet scrubby area of your garden, where it will give someone a much needed winter home!
Creating a small water source which you keep topped up and de-iced. This is especilally important for birds and hedgehogs that can't access their usual water supply.
Mulch and Protect Your Plants
Adding mulch in winter helps insulate soil, retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve structure over time. Good options include compost, leaf mould and bark chips.
Finally, Plan Your Garden’s Spring Makeover!
Winter is the perfect time to dream, design, and plan. With the garden bare, you can really see its structure and spot areas to improve. I can help with deciding on layout changes, sketching new borders, researching plants and much more.
